Who is it for?
Families facing tension, conflict or difficult events. In particular when a child has difficulties with behaviour or relating to others, or a serious eating disorder.
It can also help during a separation or divorce, and with custody questions.
A struggling child often reflects a wider imbalance: any change in one family member affects the whole group.
Two approaches
Systemic therapy sees the family as a system and works on communication between its members.
Psychoanalytic family therapy looks at unresolved parental and intergenerational conflicts.
Who takes part?
Ideally the whole family at first: parents, siblings, sometimes grandparents. Later sessions usually bring together the key members.
